The workshop will be divided into three parts: dance composition, instant composition and a part dedicated to the relationship between dance and music. In the first part of the dance composition workshop, work will be focused on the construction and reworking of a short dance/movement score through different principles and types of dance (stylized dance movement, actions, everyday gestures).

The Instant composition part of the laboratory will be dedicated to modes of improvisation where we refer to what has already happened rather than opening up to new random ideas. How from a few initial themes/preliminaries that are established, can we build a composition where the entirety of the composition is continuously being reflected upon. Already here we will refer to music and look at examples from musical composition, also in popular music.

The third strand, dedicated to the dialogue/relationship between movement and sound, dance and music, will be conducted by Andreja together with a musician. We will focus on the questions of how movement and sound influence each other? How can they complement each other and can they be mutually exclusive? How do performers from dance and music instantly compose together?

The work will be practical, with examples from performance/observation, i.e. short scores that will be established on the basis of pre-agreed parameters.

Practical examples and practice will be complemented by discussion, analysis and notation.

Andreja Rauch Podrzavnik (Slovenia) is a choreographer and pedagogue, author of performance, research and educational projects. She conceives dance as a way of behaving and at the same time as a spatial-visual potential, exploring the directions and possibilities that movement and dance offer for different contexts. By questioning how to think and practice art in a given context, she tests the relevance of the structures and formats of her practice. From this point of view, as a dance maker, she is on the edge of the definition of dance and it is this edge that attracts her and allows her to realise her ideas and inspirations. In her projects she collaborates with musicians, actors, singers, designers and dancers. She trained at the London Contemporary Dance School, where she robtained a Master of Arts degree, and she also studied at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. She teaches dance composition and improvisation both in Slovenia and abroad, both young and old. In 2009 she co-founded the Federacija Institute and is an active member of the Federacija collective.

She has received several awards for her work: the Dance Europe magazine award, Critics’ choice (2003), Povodni mož (2004) and the Gibanica festival jury prize (2007), the Ksenia Hribar award in the choreographer/author category (2015), as a member of the Federacija collective she received the Mete Vidmar Plaque (2014), the Župančič Prize (2021), and the Ksenia Hribar Prize in the choreographer/author category (2021).
